The Union government intends to repurpose the Co-WIN platform for India's Universal Immunization Programme and other national health programmes, while continuing to record Covid vaccinations and issue certificates.

The Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) vaccination record is now kept manually. "Once Co-WIN is repurposed to include the UIP, the entire vaccination system will become digitised, easing beneficiary tracking and facilitating real-time monitoring," Dr. R.S. Sharma, Co-WIN chief and CEO of the National Health Authority said in a press briefing.

"It will eliminate the need to keep a physical record. Beneficiaries will receive certificates on the spot once the immunisation programme is digitised. They can also get it by downloading it. These certificates will be kept in digital lockers "He elaborated. According to Dr. Sharma, effective record-keeping contributes to the creation of an evidence base that aids in the planning of effective interventions.

The Universal Immunisation Programme is one of the world's largest vaccination campaigns, with the goal of protecting children and pregnant women from preventable diseases. It mandates that the government provide free vaccines for 12 vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio, diphtheria, tetanus, measles, and hepatitis B.
