Yapah Town, Rivercess County – On April 25, Liberia commemorated World Malaria Day by launching a significant initiative aimed at combating malaria in the country. Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto spearheaded the launch of the Anti-Malaria Vaccine, marking a crucial step forward in Liberia’s efforts to prevent and control malaria, a persistent health challenge affecting the nation.
World Malaria Day is observed annually on the 25th of April every year to underscore the importance of sustained political commitment and continuous efforts in malaria prevention and control worldwide.
Dr. Kpoto led the launch of the Anti-Malaria Vaccine in Rivercess, Liberia, on World Malaria Day. The initiative was a result of prioritization of the healthcare sector by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. and support from the 55th National Legislature, particularly Hon. J. Fonati Koffa the Speaker of the House of Representatives who also disclosed an additional 9Million USD funds affecting the ministry of Health budget.
Malaria remains a significant health problem in Africa, with the African region accounting for approximately 94% of global malaria cases.
The theme for World Malaria Day 2024 was “Time to Deliver Zero Malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement,” emphasizing the urgency to eradicate malaria.
The Anti-Malaria Vaccine launch aimed to contribute to this goal by providing protection against malaria for children aged twenty-three months old to five years, a vulnerable demographic.
The launch of the Anti-Malaria Vaccine was made possible through collaboration with international partners, including GAVI Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organization (WHO), USAID, and UNICEF.
Financial and technical support from these partners played a crucial role in ensuring the availability and distribution of the malaria vaccine in Liberia.
Hon. J. Fonati Koffa, the Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, expressed commitment to allocate resources to strengthen and improve Liberia’s healthcare sector.
He highlighted the importance of equitable access to healthcare for all citizens, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Dr. Kpoto assured transparency and accountability in the utilization of funds allocated to the health sector. She pledged to address issues such as missing drugs from the healthcare system and provide updates to the public through a press conference.
The launch of the Anti-Malaria Vaccine on World Malaria Day represents a significant milestone in Liberia’s efforts to combat malaria and improve public health.
Through collaboration with international partners and strong commitment from government officials, Liberia is taking proactive steps towards achieving zero malaria and ensuring a healthier future for its citizens.
