DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray TV Iowa State Capitol Bureau) - Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is downplaying a story in the “Daily Caller” that reported her interest in becoming the U.S. Secretary of Education if Donald Trump becomes president again.

“No, I think...look at how passionate I get when I talk about education. So it’s just that I am passionate about education. I’m proud of what we’re doing,” she responded Wednesday when asked whether she has interest in the position.

Reynolds has pushed a series of changes in Iowa schools including:

--Restricting books from school libraries containing images and text about sexual acts and gender identity that some parents found objectionable.

--Committing hundreds of millions in tax dollars to private schools.

--Banning discussions about gender and sexual orientation for students younger than sixth grade.

--Restructuring the state’s area education agencies.

--Raising minimum public school teachers’ pay by nearly 50%.

The Daily Caller story quoted an unnamed Reynolds’ spokesperson confirmed her interest in serving as U.S. Secretary of Education. The quote said, “From her perspective, it’s something that she is interested in.”

Despite that, Reynolds repeated to reporters after she signed a new tax cut law that she wasn’t interested. “I think you know that I’m sometimes too passionate (about education), and they read way more into it than they should have.”

She added, “I think they mistook just the way I talk about education as maybe, ‘Pick me!’ and that was not the case.”
